First week as a student на български with Suggestopedia Method

Suggestopedia Sofia

As I wrote you last week, my husband and I started to learn Bulgarian with the suggestopedia method proposed by the Go Beyond Suggestopedia Center in Sofia. I must say that after 15 hours of intensive “class” we are highly positively surprised of the method.

15 hours sounds a lot and you probably wonder how it is possible to study that much in the evening; after work in only one week ! Be reassured, I even did not feel these hours because the suggestopedia method is designed in a way that after 3 hours of class, at 10:00pm, you are not tired or overloaded. Both Alexandre and I are very happy of this first week and let me tell you a little bit more about what we did.

Suggestopedia Method

Unlike a traditional course where you would sit in a classroom with other students, learning the grammatical bases and long list of vocabulary, the suggestopedia method is very unformal. We are only 4 “students” with the teacher, Violeta, we sit a nice a cosy atmosphere and do not learn by heart or in boring way. For example, this week, among other activities, we have been singing songs, playing role games, discussed with each other by mixing a few Bulgarian words and English words (when we did not know the words in Bulgarian), learnt the alphabet in a fun way, listened a read several times in a different way the same story, listened to classical music while the teacher was reading us a story, etc.

Suggestive Method

Here is one of the song we have been singing several times this week :

Alexandre even dreamt in Bulgarian after the first class ! He already speaks some Bulgarian but he said that this is the first time ever in his life that he dreamt in Bulgarian ! He said that he is amazed of the easiness he has to remember words he had not been able to remember before with other traditional method.

Suggestive Method

We just can’t explain it but we feel that this suggestopedia method is acting for sure in a certain way on our brain which really helps us to improve fast. As you will be able to see in the video bellow, I already ordered, alone, my first meal in Bulgarian, after having read the menu in Bulgarian of course :-). Do not laugh, it’s not easy to make a video about yourself, especially since I only made one… If you want to have the english subtitles for the Bulgarian part of the video, don’t forget to activate them using the « settings » function.

I can’t wait to be back “in class” tonight and see what our teacher prepared for us. By the way, I think the teacher is also a huge part of the success in the method. She is so nice that learning with her is a real pleasure 🙂
